“Stuff has to come from somewhere, even if it’s biorenewable”

FOREST TRENDS:

Forests are all over the place, especially in Minnesota, and they are a huge part of our product industry. Unfortunately, it is no secret that the forests are disappearing because of our need for the wood for all sorts of things. There are different types of wood, like pine (which is the most commonly used), oak or maple. They make up our paper, furniture, toys, and even insulate our homes. But if we did not have wood, a lot of the everyday things we need to use, would not be there for us, so #Ispeakforthetrees #savethetrees!

In all seriousness, the trees that make up our forests are part of life that needs to be protected because not only does it keep us BREATHING, but it also gives animals a place to live and gives us something to use for our products.

AGRICULTURE:

Everyone needs to eat food in order to live, yet most people do not even know where it comes from or what goes into making that food. You need to make sure that there is enough room to grow the food in a spot that has good, fertile soil and is able to get sunlight and water. Some people also use different practices to ensure that their crops grow the best they can. For example, crop rotation is where certain crops are rotated every season to make sure that the soil can stay healthy and improve the ground around it. Another thing that goes into account when planting crops is if they will be using pesticides to help their plants grow or not. Pesticides are good and bad, meaning that yes, they can prevent any pests from taking out your entire crop but they can stay in an environment long after the crops have been harvested, which can harm animals and humans. I cannot really speak on the subject because I am not using the crops growing for my income, but I would not use pesticides because it stays in the environment for a while, while you can just grow those crops that may have died, again next season.

CERTIFICATION:

Have you ever seen a green symbol on the back of a food carton that you did not know what it meant? That is the environmental certification, also known as an eco-label which might ring a bell, and it shows that that company has met certain standards that ensure they are being eco-friendly.

One example of one that I have seen on quite a few products is this one:      →Related image

This specific symbol is the Forest Stewardship Council, which we learned about in

lessons past, but it means that means that the product it is on was made from

paper or wood that was cut out of a forest that has been managed very environmentally friendly. By having all companies that have wood products comply with those standards, it can help our entire planet keep our forests clean and healthy.
